Form meets function in "On the Rise," designed by Wendy Khawaja and located in The EDGE, @denverzoo's tiger habitat 🐅Installed in 2020, this artwork consists of circular, tiered platforms, designed to give the tigers a range of possibilities for interaction with the sculpture as a place to climb, jump, lounge, splash and play.The large curved platforms and pedestals were cast in reinforced concrete and sited next to the exhibit’s water feature. The tigers enjoy the sight, sound and feel of the water as they splash between levels, guided by the platforms’ curvatures and varied inclines.

Welcome to Jurassic Park(ing Garage) 🦕 Situat

Welcome to Jurassic Park(ing Garage) 🦕 Situated in the canyon-like area next to the elevators in the @denvermuseumns’s parking garage, “Camarasaurus” and “Ceratosaurus” stage an unexpected prehistoric scene. Paleoartist @staabstudios created a long-necked Camarasaurus (approximately 60 feet long and 34 feet tall) rearing up on its hind legs in a defensive position after being startled by a smaller predatory Ceratosaurus (approximately 17 feet long) on a ledge nearby. Camarasaurus’ head pops over the top of the parking garage structure, visible to people walking in City Park and entering the museum. The basic shape of each sculpture is created using high density foam, reinforced by steel armature where the feet, heads, and tails connect. Then, the foam is coated with a quarter-inch layer of fiberglass resin, which creates a sturdy “exoskeleton” for the sculpture. Next, Staab applies a layer of sculpting epoxy and the fine detail of the dinosaur’s skin. This texture is based upon actual skin imprint fossils from dinosaurs of the same family to ensure the sculpture is as scientifically accurate as possible. Finally, Staab adds paint and washes to give the dinosaur a life-like look. Start to finish, the sculptures took about six months to complete. Each dinosaur sculpture is a full-scale model of what each creature might have looked like in life, drawn from Staab’s extensive knowledge of paleontology and his consultations with working scientists. Also, both fossils were first discovered in Colorado—Camarasaurus in 1877 near Cañon City, and Ceratosaurus in 1883 near Delta—giving them each a special connection to the state. Sneak a peek at this new addition to the #DenverPublic Artcollection: "Thread of Words" by Sixto Cordero and Karen Kitayama (@forma.studio), freshly installed in Creekfront Park. Stay tuned for more to come 👀In addition to the sculpture, the accompanying plaque includes history of the site, the multilingual poem inscribed into the piece in English, Spanish, Arapaho, Ute and Cheyenne and two tactile reliefs so people who are blind or low-vision can experience the shape of the artwork and its inspiration.From the artists:Thread of Words creates a large-scale iconic image that will enhance the identity of Larimer Bridge. The artwork is noteworthy and elegant and creates an instantly recognizable identifier. We believe the placemaking character of the artwork lends itself to be a part of the identity of Auraria while paying homage to its history. The sculpture invites viewers to move around it and follow its twisting lines to discover the poem contained within. The poem wraps around the piece and flows like the water it references.The geometry of the artwork is reminiscent of a thread or a ribbon, an intentional design element that is meant to be a reference to Larimer Bridge, a thread that “connects” Auraria to Denver. Another reference contained in the geometry of the artwork is the undulating geology of Cherry Creek. The Arapaho often communicated visually and told stories using pictographs. A pictograph is a symbol that represents a concept, object, place or activity. The Arapaho pictograph for a creek or a river is an undulating ribbon that tapers on both ends. As can be clearly seen, the geometry of a Thread of Words draws direct inspiration from that symbol.By this creek was our home, it was taken,From this creek came their gold, it was spent.But the real treasure is the people of this land,That persists in places near and far.Community, it is most important above all.
