About This Piece
This artwork was created by artist Thomas “Detour” Evans during the 2025-2026 Webb Artist Residency.
About the Webb Artist Residency
Six artists were selected (through public process) to collaborate with employees from city agencies to create artwork that engages with and reflects the work they do. Throughout the residency, artists engaged with the day-to-day efforts of municipal employees, uncovering their impact on our city and its people. Detour worked with the Auditor’s Office, Climate Action Sustainability and Resiliency, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, Forestry Office, and the Department of Housing Stability when preparing to create this artwork.
About the Artwork
Civic: The Board Game is a board game about playfully stepping into the shoes of workers running Denver. Civic invites players to experience public service as it actually feels: incremental, human, collaborative—and deeply meaningful. Viewers are invited to step into the role of public servants navigating the systems, delays, wins, and responsibilities of city work. Movement around the board is intentionally slow, reflecting bureaucracy, process, and accountability. Along the way, players encounter real-world situations—from audits and media attention to community praise, infrastructure challenges, and moments of progress.
