About This Piece

Biocenosis: A community wall of pollinators

Biocenosis refers to all living and interacting organisms that exist together within a habitat. Our mosaic emphasizes the importance of collaboration and community by telling the story of local pollinators. The mosaic combines hand sculpted porcelain tiles of native pollinators such as the sphinx moth, monarch butterflies, wasps, ants, flies, and more. The larger-than-life pollen tiles are based on electron microscope imagery of the pollen of native plants, and the showy and spider milkweed flowers fill the background. The border pollinator tiles were created by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and Swansea Elementary School in 2025. This rich ecosystem is bursting with life and is represents the powerful and beautiful community in Swansea.
